Shri Sartaj Singh was born on May 26, 1940 at Badnagar in Ujjain district. His father had come with Shri Avtar Singh Chhatwal after partition of India from Rawalpindi to Itarsi in 1948. After graduation from Delhi University in 1960 and engaged in ancestral business. He came into contact with late Shri Hari Vishnu Kamath and became active in politics drawing inspiration from him. He was working Chairman of the municipal council for 6 months in 1971. He was elected as Alderman in Itarsi Nagar Palika in 1975. He was elected as municipal council Chairman but did not take oath due to declaration of Emergency and was detained under MISA from July 1975 to November 1976. He was Chairman of Itarsi Nagar Palika from 1978 to 1980.

He defeated Congress candidate Shri Rameshwar Neekhra in Lok Sabha election from Hoshangabad constituency consecutively 3 times from 1989 to 1996. He defeated Congress candidate Shri Arjun Singh in Lok Sabha election in 1998. He did not contest Lok Sabha election in 1999. He won in Lok Sabha election again in 2004. In Vidhan Sabha election in 2008, Shri Sartaj Singh defeated Congress candidate and the then Deputy Speaker of Vidhan Sabha Shri Hazarilal Raghuvanshi from Seoni-Malwa Vidhan Sabha constituency.

As a member of Parliament, Shri Sartaj Singh contributed a lot in education sector in his Lok Sabha constituency and promoted sports in the district. Literary and cultural programmes were promoted in the constituency. He visited 9 countries as a member of Parliamentary Committee. He visited America as a member of Indian delegation and China as a member of Indian industry delegation. During his Parliamentary tenure, he was member of Railway Advisory Committee, Water-Land-Air Transport Committee, Tourism and Culture Department’s Committee, Privilege Committee and Railway Convention Committee. In Vidhan Sabha, he was Chairman of Assurance Committee and member of other committees. Shri Sartaj Singh was sworn-in as a member of Madhya Pradesh Council of Ministers on October 28, 2009 and was given portfolio of Forests.

Shri Sartaj Singh was elected as MLA from Seoni-Malwa Vidhan Sabha constituency in December 2013. He took oath as Cabinet Minister on December 21, 2013.
