Shri Gyan Singh was born on May 22, 1953 at village Kohka in Umaria district. Educated upto higher secondary, Shri Gyan Singh is an agriculturist. He has special interest in spiritualism, music and cultural activities. He entered political life by joining Praja Socialist Party in 1966. He was Organising Secretary of Naurozabad Vidhan Sabha constituency during 1968-70, General Secretary of Shahdol district Praja Socialist Party in 1971-72 and member of state working committee during 1972-74. Shri Singh was elected to 6th Vidhan Sabha in 1977 and became Minister of State for Planning and Statistics. He was President of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh in 1980-81, Shri Gyan Singh was elected to 7th Vidhan Sabha in 1980. He was a member of Shahdol District BJP’s working committee and its President. He was also a member of State BJP’s working committee. Shri Gyan Singh was elected to 9th Vidhan Sabha in 1990 and became Minister of State for Forests and later Minister of State for Jails. Shri Gyan Singh was elected to 10th Vidhan Sabha in 1993 and was a member of various departmental advisory committees. He was elected to 11th and 12th Lok Sabha in 1996 and 1998 and was member of advisory committees of Energy, Steel and Coal Departments. He published books “Gyan Ki Pudiya” and “Janata Ka Dakiya” in years 1967 and 1977, respectively. Shri Gyan Singh was elected to 12th Vidhan Sabha in 2003 and 13th Vidhan Sabha in 2008 from Bandhavgarh Vidhan Sabha constituency.

Shri Gyan Singh was re-elected to 14th Vidhan Sabha from Bandhavgarh constituency in Umaria district in year 2013. He took oath as a Cabinet Minister on December 21, 2013.
